Changing Attitudes About Health...Is There a Role for Glutathione?

I’ve introduced you to something called “glutathione” but... you may still be wondering why you have never heard of it. Surely something so important should be common knowledge.

In truth, your family doctor may only have a vague idea about this essential health aid. The reason for this ambiguity has to do with society’s attitude toward health and the treatment of health issues. Changing attitudes, combined with advances in research and technology, have opened up a whole new approach to health enhancement and disease prevention.

Let’s use an example to help illustrate. Not so long ago, if you were feeling under the weather, you would go to your family doctor who might prescribe you some medication to cure whatever was ailing you. Now we’re finding that antibiotics are not as effective as they used to be. Micro-organisms are more resistant to treatment and there are new ones being discovered that the medical community is unsure how to treat.

This situation has led to a shift in the attitudes of both practitioners and “patients”. Interest in the field of alternative medicine is growing. Now the attitude is to prevent illness instead of treating problems after they’ve occurred. We’re focusing on strengthening the body; physically and mentally. Doctors are working with therapists, nutritionists, and exercise experts to help their patients achieve and maintain good health.

Next time you aren’t feeling well your doctor may ask about your eating and exercise habits. He may even recommend that you include some natural supplements in your diet. Likely the conversation will also include a discussion of what your stress levels are and how you cope with that stress. This is a very different scenario from the one I presented earlier where the patient was simply sent on their way with a prescription for medication.

How does glutathione figure into this conversation? We’ll answer that question next time.
